“Towards a new self-conception – Libraries as cultural and social centres”
The 42nd ABDOS Conference will take place from 28th to 30th August 2013 in the National Library of Belarus in Minsk immediately after the World Slavicists’ Congress in the capital of Belarus. It will be organised by the Association of Libraries and Documentation Units for Research on Eastern, East Central and South Eastern Europe (ABDOS). The National Library of Belarus and MIPP International will support the conference.
Scheduled days of arrival will be the 26th and 27th August 2013. After the conference an excursion to the north of Belarus (Vitebsk, the birthplace of Marc Chagall) will be organised. This will allow for transfer and departure via Vilnius.
The National Library of Belarus will grant participants support as far as obtaining visas is concerned.
Interested speakers are requested to send their proposals for papers as soon as possible, but not later than 22nd June, 2013.
The planned topics are:
1. The current role and tasks of libraries in towns and the countryside 2. The development of reading cultures in Eastern and South Eastern Europe during the last years/decades 3. Slavonic, Polish, German and English studies in Belarus – Academic work and forms of literature supply 4. Digital libraries in and for Belarus, Eastern and South Eastern Europe 5. East European and South East European studies world-wide – What does our clientele really need?
6. Free topics of current interest
Representatives from commercial companies are sincerely invited to participate in the conference.

Conference languages will be German, English and Russian.
On the evening of 27th August the customary informal meeting for delegates, who have already arrived in Minsk, will take place.
The conference fee is 60 € (ABDOS members: 40 €), for commercial participants 300 €.
