New online libraries are no news any more. However, I would suggest to have a look at the collection of electronic books of the National online library of the Republic of Tatarstan. The Kazan University is one of the oldest universitites in Russia (founded in 1804). It became a centre of oriental studies and a strong science school was also established there. The University is associated with such names as Nikolai Lobachevsky, Yevgeny Zavoisky, Sergei Aksakov, Leo Tolstoy, Lenin, Velimir Khlebnikov, etc. However, Kazan is also associated with bibliophiles and book collectors. Ivan Alkseevich Vtorov amassed a collection of 1908 items: books and periodicals. His son Nikolai, a scholar himself, domated this collection to the town of Kazan in 1844. Vtorov’s collection became a foundation collection of the National Library of Tatarstan, which was opened to public as a city library in 1865. The other great collection was put together by the well-known educationist Ivan Aleksandrovich Sakharov (1815-1885). And of course, their sizable Tatarica collection would be of the most importance.
